64BitWorld’s The Week in Gaming for 8th October- 15th October 2021
Welcome to today’s weekly gaming news article! Today’s first
story was confirmed moments after I hit publish on last week’s article and I am
sure this will be a trend over the following weeks. Let’s begin!
Rockstar announces Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy- The
Definitive Edition
The compilation featuring GTA III, Vice City,
and San Andreas will be releasing later this year on PlayStation 5, PlayStation
4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC. They will also come to
iOS and Android in the first half of 2022.
Rockstar says the trilogy “will feature across-the-board upgrades including
graphical improvements and modern gameplay enhancements for all three titles,
while still maintaining the classic look and feel of the originals.”
Rockstar will remove the current version of these titles
from digital storefronts. They are currently available in their original form
on Steam, and the PS2 versions can be purchased on PS4. San Andreas is
available on Xbox via backwards compatibility. If you want to play these games
as they were originally released, I advise purchasing them in the next week
before their delisting.
There were many rumours and speculation including the titles
being listed by a Korean age rating board.
The official release date and pricing are yet to be
confirmed by Rockstar games.
Nintendo Switch Online N64 titles will have 60hz English Options in Europe
Nintendo will offer Europeans the ability to play the 60Hz English versions of N64 titles
when they come to the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pass later this month.
In the Nintendo Direct which revealed these titles, the
games in the European direct were running at 50Hz whilst in the American direct
they ran at 60Hz. This meant the European games were running slower than their
North American counterparts. This is because European N64s ran at 50Hz as this
was the most common type of TV in the region at the time. Most European games offered
more language choices like French, German, Spanish and Italian.
By offering the 60Hz English version of N64 titles, Nintendo is essentially giving Europeans the option to play the North American
version which run faster. If you want to play the games in another language or
play the games at 50Hz you still have the option to play the European versions.
As such this is a great change and brings the best of both worlds to the region.
This also ensures the games will be playable worldwide online.
The launch line-up of games includes:
- Super Mario 64
- The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
- Lylat Wars (Or if you decide to play it
at 60Hz you will be playing the American version titled Star Fox 64)
- Dr Mario 64 (This will only be at 60Hz as it was only released in America on the N64)
- Mario Kart 64
- Sin and Punishment (Similarly 60Hz exclusive as it was only released in Japan on the N64)
- Mario Tennis 64
- Operation: WinBack
- Yoshi’s Story
Metroid Dread suffers Credit Controversy whilst *nearly* beating sales records
Roberto Mejias, a former 3D artist at MercurySteam, raised
the issue on LinkedIn questioning why he was left out of the credits.
Video Game credits are not a
standardised procedure so studios can decide who will appear in their game’s
credits.
In a Vandal report, a MercurySteam representative responded to this and said
that for a developer to appear in the credits, they must have stayed at the
studio for 25% or more of the development time.
The Spanish studio's policy of not
crediting its former staff member may prevent them from getting another
position in the industry and it is disappointing they seem to not want to
rectify this issue. In the film industry, there is specific guidance to prevent
this from happening however it does not apply to games.
Metroid Dread had a very successful
launch last week. The games physical version nearly outsold every other game in the series in the UK except Metroid Prime
by less than 1000 units (however this does not include the digital version so
it probably did surpass this).
In Japan, a country where Metroid
has never traditionally sold well, Dread debuted at number one in the Famitsu Charts and
did manage to break the first-week sales record for the series.
Epic Games acknowledge Among Us influence in Fortnite’s Imposter Mode
Back in August Epic revealed a
new mode for Fortnite, which many players pointed out had a striking resemblance
to the indie hit Among Us.
Innersloth Community Manager, and
generally cool person, Victoria Tran took to Twitter
to say “it would’ve been really, really cool to collab haha. Just sad indie
hours rn.”
Epic has rectified the issue. In
their blog
post, they said “v18.20 brings improvements to Imposters, the game mode
inspired by Among US from Innersloth!”
It is great to see Epic Games
rectify the issue, and who know, maybe they will be able to officially cross
over soon?
Hopefully, MercurySteam will
follow suit and patch in some of their former employees into Dread’s credits as
well.
