Hey guys, today is Friday so it is time for my article weekly article talking about all things gaming. Here are my top 5 news stories from the past week.
Sora becomes the last character in Fighter’s Pass 2 for Super
Smash Bros. Ultimate
Sora's appearance in Smash Ultimate |
The Kingdom Heart’s series main protagonist will unseal
the door to darkness and join the rest of the Smash cast on the 19th of October 2021.
In the gameplay presentation, Sakurai showed off Sora using a
range of melee and magic attacks with his iconic keyblade. His
alternative costumes are based on his appearance in the original game, Kingdom
Hearts II, Kingdom Hearts 3D Dream Drop Distance and Kingdom
Hearts III.
Sora’s new stage is based on Hallow Bastion from the first
game which transforms into the Station of Awakening in the climax of the
fighting. The stage features 9 songs from the series, as well as a bonus one
for those who have save data from Melody of Memory on their Switch.
A day earlier Sakurai
took to Twitter to say “Even if you don’t play Smash Bros., if you
are interested in gaming, please watch it.” He did mention that Sora originally
won the Smash Ballot which took place in 2015 but they decided to keep this
information secret until now. Sora was trending four days before the
announcement on Twitter and #ThankYouSakurai was trending afterwards.
Additionally, there were also some new Mii costumes
announced including the Doom Slayer from the Doom series as well as Judd
and an Octoling wig from the Splatoon series. Amiibo of Steve, Alex, Sephiroth,
Pyra, Mythra and Kazuya will all be in production as well.
Kingdom Hearts 1.5+2.5 HD ReMIX, Kingdom Hearts HD
II.8 Final Chapter Prologue and Kingdom Hearts III will also be coming to
Switch next year in the form of cloud versions.
Last year Tetsuya Nomura, director of the Kingdom Hearts
series, said in an interview
that Square Enix considered porting these games to switch but found things to be
technologically difficult.
Metroid Dread’s Review Embargo is Up- Here is what critics had to say
The first new 2D Metroid in 19 years has received generally
favourable reviews with a Metacritic score of
88.
PJ O’Reily writing for Nintendo
Life said, “This is a super-slick, hugely entertaining and exquisitely
designed entry in the Metroid franchise the plays better than anything we’ve
seen from the series so far.”
In Maher’s review for The Gamer, he
said praised the core gameplay loop by saying “Dread is one of the most
consistent games I have played all year, if not several” but was disappointed
by some of the games signposting and platforming.
Metroid Dread is out today (Friday 8th
October) and is available on the Nintendo
eShop for £49.99.
The release coincides with the new Switch OLED model which
has also received positive reception from critics.
Far Cry 6’s Review embargo is also up
Ubisoft’s next open-world blockbuster has also had reviews
published this week. It received generally favourable scores.
In Eurogamer’s
positive review they said “If you are looking for a sequel that would shake
up the series and bring about a gameplay revolution, you’re going to be
disappointed, but if you enjoy that classic Far Cry collect-em-up grind and
simply want a brand new sandbox to explore and explode, you’re going to be far
from bored with all that Yara has to offer”.
Eurogamer was also sceptical about the change in tone.
Previous games in the series had an unknowing protagonist fight their way for
survival, whilst in 6, the protagonist is a walking tank with a backstory that
was born for guerrilla-style warfare.
On the other side of the coin, VGC awarded
the game with 2 out of 5 stars stating that “Far Cry 6 is the ne plus ultra of
why open-world game design is so badly in need of a revolution.” They praised
the performance of Giancarlo Esposito but were ultimately left unimpressed by
the dated level design.
Overall, the reviews seem to praise some of the story
elements and gorgeous settings and visuals, but a few critics seem to be tired
of the similar open-world gameplay. It is currently on a 75-80 on Metacritic
(depending on which version you are looking at).
Far Cry 6 is out from Thursday 7th October
on PC, PS5, PS4, Series X and S, Xbox One and Stadia.
The composer of Dragon Quest, Koichi Sugiyama, has passed away
The Japanese musician died on the 30th of September
at the age of 90 after suffering from a stroke.
Sugiyama composed the soundtracks for all 11 mainline Dragon
Quest games. Square Enix has said he composed over 500 tracks for the
series. His last credit will be for the upcoming Dragon Quest XII: The
Flames of Fate. His work on the series has been acknowledged by the
Japanese government as he was named a Person of Cultural Merit in 2020.
Sugiyama held some controversial viewpoints by being denying
Japanese war crimes during the Imperial era as well as his political views.
A statement from Square Enix (retrieved from Nintendo Life) reads “We would like to express our deepest respect and gratitude for Koichi Sugiyama’s achievements during his lifetime… The funeral and farewell ceremony was held only by relatives and close relatives. Please refrain from condolences, incense offerings, flowers, etc. due to the wishes of the bereaved family. We are planning to hold a farewell party with everyone at a later date, but the schedule etc. are undecided. Thank you for your understanding.”
Twitch suffers a big data leak
The video live streaming platform has become a victim of a
large data leak.
Included in the leak are a history of Twitch’s source code
as well as payments made to the platforms most prolific streamers.
Twitch has said they have found no evidence of passwords
being compromised.
To be on the safe side it is probably better to change your
password if you frequently use the platform or have personal information there.
Also included in the leak was an unreleased store platform
similar to Steam and the Epic Game Store, indicating that Amazon is considering
competing in this market.
The
BBC’s Cyber Reporter Joe Tidy has said that it may be “the biggest leak I
have ever seen- an entire company’s most valuable data cleaned out in one fell
swoop.”
